These are the rules of the place, in plain words. Using Private Line means agreeing to them. How we handle your data is in the Privacy Policy.
Private Line is a social and professional network: a place to post, to be found, to reach people and to be reached. It is free and open to anyone 18 or over. You must be 18 or over to hold an account.
One person, one account, under a name you actually use. Accounts impersonating somebody else are removed.
These rules exist for two reasons: they are the kind of platform we want, and advertising pays for it. Ads appear beside what people post, and an advertising network will stop paying a platform that lets the following stand. Both reasons point the same way.
Sexual content, nudity, or anything sexualising a minor. There is no artistic, educational or ironic exception to the last one, and it is reported to the authorities rather than merely removed — see our Child Safety Standards at myprivateline.co/child-safety.
Violence, gore, or content that celebrates, incites or organises harm against a person or a group.
Harassment, threats, or content attacking somebody on the basis of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
Content promoting or facilitating illegal drugs, weapons sales, counterfeit goods, or anything else illegal where you or the reader are.
Deceptive or dangerous claims — medical misinformation, fake cures, get-rich schemes, or content misrepresenting who you are or who you speak for.
Anything you do not hold the rights to. Reposting is built in and credits the original; passing somebody else's work off as your own is not the same thing.
Spam: repeated identical posts, engagement farming, automated bulk messaging, or links whose only purpose is to move somebody off the platform.
Ads may appear in the feed and in Sparks — roughly one in every two or three posts, on an uneven rhythm, and never two together. They are labelled, and video ads never start with sound.
We are paid when they are seen. That is what makes the platform free to use, including the digital business card.
Ads are never sold against an individual account, and no advertiser is given your personal details. Nothing in your profile marked as hidden, and nothing you gave us at signup — your phone number, your gender, your age range — is passed to an advertiser.
No advertising appears anywhere near political content. Not on a political page, not beside a political post in the feed, and not beside anything sharing one. This is stricter than any advertising policy requires and is our own choice: a political page is here to be reachable, and an ad beside it invites a question about who paid for the placement that we would rather never be asked.
Political pages carry no advertising revenue arrangement of any kind, and no money moves through this platform on a political account. That is enforced by the database, not by us remembering.
Ads are also withheld from anything that has been reported and not yet reviewed. A report is not a verdict, but it is a reason to wait.
There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive behaviour on Private Line. Anybody can report a post or a comment, and every report is read by a person within 24 hours. Removing something hides it and tells whoever wrote it why, in the words of whoever decided.
Anybody can block anybody. A blocked account's posts, comments and messages disappear from the person who blocked them at once, and the block is reported to us — an account that keeps being blocked is an account we look at.
Some checks are automatic — repeated identical posts are flagged for review, for instance. Automatic checks are a triage aid, not a safety guarantee, and nothing here promises that everything against these rules is found before somebody sees it.
Community founders and the people they appoint moderate their own communities. Private Line moderates everything.
What you post stays yours. By posting it you give us permission to show it on Private Line, to the people your settings allow, for as long as it is up. Nothing here transfers ownership of it to us.
Nothing you have written is deleted by us to make a feature work. Posts taken down in moderation are hidden rather than destroyed, so the decision can be reviewed.
You can close your account at any time from Settings. It is deactivated at once and deleted thirty days later; signing back in within those thirty days undoes it. After that your profile, posts, photos, videos, stories, comments and card are deleted. Messages you exchanged with other people are kept for them, with your name and account removed, because a conversation belongs to both people in it.
Repeatedly breaking the rules above ends the account. So does a single instance of the things that are reported to the authorities rather than merely removed.
Private Line is provided as it is. We work to keep it up and to keep it safe, but we do not promise it will always be available or free of faults, and we are not responsible for what other members post or do. Where the law lets us, our liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us, which for a free account is nothing.
We may change or end features, and we may end these terms, with notice where we can give it. If you break them we may suspend or close your account without notice.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, and any dispute is heard in its courts, unless the law where you live says otherwise.
Tiers are earned by posting and taking part, and are not for sale. A paid subscription may exist alongside them; it will never be a way to buy a tier.
The digital business card is free while you keep posting — about four posts a month, each with a photo or video. Fall behind and you are told; nothing switches off without warning, nothing on the card is deleted, and posting once turns it back on.
Badges do not apply to political pages.
